Under the main aspect of the creation of photon pairs from vacuum, the Maxwell equations in anisotropic universes with a diagonal Bianchi type I metric is investigated. Thereby, a method was employed developed earlier by Sagnotti and Zwiebach (1981). For two axisymmetric expansion laws, exact photon solutions was obtained of the Maxwell equations making use of a WKB particle concept. The number densities was computed of created photons and the importance of singularity avoidance for getting finite results is emphasized. In the case of weak anisotropies the results by Zel'dovich, and Starobinsky (1977) are regained and commented on.
