The paper reviews the available results of measurements and modeling studies of the polar lower thermosphere for the purpose of defining the large-scale dynamics, temperature, and compositional structure of this region and its response to auroral inputs. Simulations of lower thermosphere are made using the NCAR thermosphere/ionosphere general circulation model, illustrating the dependence of the polar lower thermosphere structure and composition on auroral processes. It is shown that variations in major neutral constituent densities of O, O2, and N2 are caused primarily by dynamics, whereas variations in minor neutral constituents N(2D), N(4S), and NO, as well as of lower-thermosphere electron and ion densities, are controlled mainly by chemical processes driven by solar and auroral ionization and dissociation.
