Airglow OH emissions originate from the mesopause and provide optical signatures of various physical and chemical processes occurring in this region of the upper atmosphere. Emissions from different vibrational levels of the mesopause OH (in the ground electronic state) may peak at different heights, roughly between 80 and 90 km. The thermalized rotational distribution of these band emissions is widely employed to infer the kinetic temperature (and a small temperature gradient) of the mesopause. Variations in airglow OH band intensities and rotational temperature are interpreted as signatures of various disturbances propagating in the mesopause. These and allied topics of airglow OH emissions are reviewed to identify some unanswered questions in this field which form the bases for current aeronomic investigations of the mesosphere.
