New data on the evolution of planetary nebulae and their central stars are presented, and a mechanism for the origin of these objects is proposed. The existing empirical material best supports the hypothesis in which the formation of the nebulae is the result of the ejection or separation of a massive shell at a single time. This process might occur ballistically during short powerful flares of a helium layer source in evolved red giants or during some other nonstationary stage in the evolution of the star. After ejection of part of the stellar envelope in the form of the embryonic planetary nebula, the star, having lost some of its mass, can no longer sustain the nuclear energy sources and begins to contract, radiating through gravitational contraction.
