Theoretical P Cygni profiles are calculated on the basis of a comoving-frame formalism and compared to those obtained from the Sobolev approximation. It is found that serious, systematic deviations occur over the whole line profile if realistic Doppler-broadening (turbulence-) velocities are considered. The error in the Sobolev approximation arises mainly from the treatment of the formal integral and, to a lesser extent, from the approximated source function. The investigation also encompasses the problems of overlapping doublets and underlying photospheric components. For the comoving-frame calculation, an economic iteration procedure is given, and the formalism is extended to line blends.
