Major characteristics of the low energy X-ray instrumentation and its expected scientific return are discussed for EXOSAT. The experiment subsystems of the baseline are: the X-ray collector, which consists of a nested set of parabolic concentrators; focal plane detectors; and filters. Since a major portion of the EXOSAT observing time will be spent in arbitrary pointing mode, the return from the mission can be optimized by an X-ray imaging telescope. Details of this option are provided.
