The 25 arcsec resolution mapping of the 370 micrometers (809 GHz) (3)P2 to (3)P1 fine structure line of neutral atomic carbon in the molecular clouds M17 and W51 is reported. In the HII region/molecular cloud interface in M17, bright (CI) emission comes from a 1 pc wide ridge at the edge of the molecular cloud. The (CI) emission is located deeper in the molecular cloud than the 158 micrometers (CII) emission and is well correlated with the distribution of C18O J-2 to 1 and 12 CO 7 to 6 line emission at the interface. At the peak, the (CI) line has an optical depth of 2, corresponding to a beam averaged CI column density of 6 times 10 to the 18th power cc and a CI/CO mean column density ratio of 0.2. The peak Rayleigh-Jeans brightness temperature is 33 K, indicating that the kinetic temperature of the atomic gas is 50 K. In the massive star formation region W51, the (CI) emission peaks on the compact infrared source and HII region IRS 2, and at the interface between the extended HII region IRS 1 and the dense molecular condensation W51 MAIN. Relative location and spatial scales of the (CI) emission and mean CI/CO ration in W51 are similar to those in M17, but there are substantial spatial variations in the CI/CO column density ratio.
