Star removal methods for scanning space surveillance sensors are examined. The methods include a prior scan comparison in which all current scan locations with a point exceeding an upper irradiance threshold are inspected in the previous scan and a prior two-scan comparison in which the current scan locations exceeding the upper threshold are eliminated if either of the two previous scans exceeds the lower threshold at the same location. Also, consideration is given to temporary catalog comparison using two out of two scans in which the current scan is compared to a temporary catolog. The star leakage rates, target loss rates, and effects of spatial noise for these three methods are compared. The advantages of prior scan comparison over the permanent star catalog method are noted.
