A square-root transformation method is proposed for low-cost optimal compression of the counts resulting from random event detectors such as photon counters. As compared to the so-called floating point and logarithmic compression techniques proposed by Diamond et al. (1974), the square-root compression method permits almost doubling of the transmission rate for a given type of data from spacecraft with no significant loss of information.
