Suggested means of detecting extraterrestrial civilizations are examined. Such suggestions include the construction of a $10 billion, 25-square-mile radio receiver consisting of 1500 component antennas each 100 meters in diameter. Up to the present, 200 stars have been investigated for evidence of intelligent life; the author concedes that at least 200,000 stars would have to be probed to give us even a reasonable chance of detection, but contends that it would be worth our while to do so.
