The mechanism by means of which matter accretes into a black hole may be found in quasars and other active galaxies. Attention is presently given to the case of Cygnus X-1 in light of eight years of observational data, which reveal episodic emissions of MeV gamma rays; this verifies a theoretical model in which the material falling into the black hole becomes sufficiently hot to generate a 'pair cloud', or bubble of matter saturated with electron-positron pairs. The mechanism is speculated to be scalable to the million-solar mass black hole at the center of the Milky Way, as well as the billion-solar mass black holes powering quasars.
