Evidence supporting the existence of black holes is presented. The effect of pressure from gravity on stars is discussed. The characteristics and detection of white dwarfs and neuron stars are described. The properties of three stars (Cygnus X-1, LMC X-3, and A0620-00), which are black hole candidates, are examined in order to support the hypothesis of the existence of black holes. Arguments for the existence of black holes in the three stars are: the flickering X-rays reveal the presence of an ultracompact star; the rapid orbital motion of the visible companion; and the relativity theory rules that nothing can prevent the massive compact star from collapsing to form a black hole.
