Charney and Drasin (1961) have shown that in spite of the upper atmosphere being mechanically screened from the troposphere by the zonal winds, the energy concentrated in the troposphere can diffuse upward during the equinoctial wind reversal, when the velocity of the zonal winds is minimal at all heights up to 100 km. In the present paper, the influence of upward energy diffusion on the ionosphere is studied by analyzing the changes in the midday value of the critical frequency of the F2 layer during the March-May periods of 1957 through 1975 on the basis of Alma-Ata vertical sounding data. The ionospheric disturbances observed during these periods are tabulated and it is shown that they may well be interpreted as the response of ionosphere to the energy transported upward, possibly, by large-scale energy-laden waves arising at the earth's surface.
