Theories on the origin and structure of the sun's magnetic field are discussed. The solar dynamo theory and Piddington's indestructible twisted rope model are the principal (and opposing) views considered. Empirical objections to both of these hypotheses are enumerated. Both models posit strong toroidal (azimuthal) magnetic fields; in the dynamo theory thermal convection generates the fields, whereas in Piddington's theory the fields control convection.
