It is shown that mass and angular-momentum loss from a close binary system may take place at different stages of evolution for a broad variety of systems. A simple method to treat this process is presented. It is shown that mass loss from a system cannot seriously influence the evolution of the mass-losing component. To obtain agreement between theory and observations for systems with small masses (combined mass not exceeding 6 solar masses), it is necessary to assume that about 40 per cent to 50 per cent of the matter lost by the primary is lost by the system.
