A mechanism is proposed that can explain the observed high-velocity mass ejections from the corona referred to as transients. Transients, eruptive prominences, and chromospheric spray-type surges are considered to result from the successive passage of strong shock waves across the extremely inhomogeneous discontinuties in the solar atmosphere at the chromosphere-corona and prominence-corona boundaries. Calculations are performed which can be used to interpret the observed characteristics of solar transients.
