Recent developments in knowledge of the interior structure of Jupiter are summarized, and the effects of Pioneer 10 data on models of the interior are assessed. Models are described which are based on theoretical equations of state of hydrogen and helium and on various observed parameters, including low H2/He ratio models, solar ratio models, and models which take into account the incomplete miscibility of the two elements in the condensed state. It is shown that the Pioneer 10 data necessitate an increase in the amount of hydrogen in the low ratio models and a decrease in the solar ratio ones, which may constitute evidence in favor of incomplete miscibility. The large heat emission from Jupiter is confirmed by the data, but no evidence is obtained for the emission mechanism. The discovery of the Small Red Spot is discussed, possible sources are considered for the highly eccentric and inclined Jovian magnetic field, and models for the evolution of Jupiter are outlined. It is concluded that the planet appears to be in hydrostatic equilibrium, that the assumption of a fully adiabatic and homogeneous interior is probably not tenable, and that limited solubility in the hydrogen-helium system must be taken into accout.
