Observations of the ground state (v=0, j=2-1) transition of silicon monoxide (SiO) shows a rather smooth, low intensity profile stretching over a large velocity range. The presence of ground state emission at velocities which are not present is the v=1 or v=2 lines is interpreted as thermal emission in the ground state in regions where there is insufficient excitation to produce the vibrationally excited masers. Only VY Canis Majoris shows a profile which could be interpreted as ground-state maser emission.
