Using a small tritium radioactive source, a sensitometer has been constructed for projecting calibration spots on an astronomical plate during the observing exposure time. The spectral distribution of the self-luminous lamp is quite similar to that of studied galaxies, and the aperture is approximately the same for both sensitometer and telescope. Calibration of the plate is done under exactly the same experimental conditions as the astronomical-exposure calibration. Owing to the fact that the surface brightness of the lamp is constant (over several years), an absolute calibration of each spot leads to a relatively accurate determination of night-sky brightness. Such a process is useful for photographic photometry of galaxies.
