The paper surveys research carried out over the last five years concerning the stratospheric ozone content in the Arctic and Antarctic. Particular attention is given to the international expeditions of 1987 and 1989 during which a great deal of data was obtained on the behavior of ozone and other trace components of the polar atmosphere. Mechanisms for the formation of the ozone hole in the Antarctic and reasons for the absence of such a hole in the Arctic are explored in detail. The determining role of the emission of chlorine-containing compounds in the ozone-hole formation is emphasized.
