Problems pertaining to sudden stratospheric warmings are considered using a linear model for the propagation of stationary planetary waves with dissipative factors taken into account. The position of the equatorial critical line in the troposphere and lower stratosphere is shown to strongly influence the generation of stratospheric warmings. The calculated planetary wave parameters are compared to observational data and good agreement is found regarding wave amplification and focusing, the vertical and latitudinal geopotential phase shifts, mean flow deceleration, and the intensification of the westerlies playing a role in the evolution of sudden stratospheric warmings.
