Accuracy estimates for current models of the earth gravity field and the data sets on which they are based are summarized, and applicability of various accuracy-estimation procedures to the planned GRM satellite geodesy program is discussed in detail. The emphasis is on the geopotential harmonic coefficients of lower degree and order and the transfer of errors in these coefficients to the lumped coefficients and projected worst-case along-track errors for GRM. Numerical results are presented in extensive tables and graphs, and an orbit-determination method and an earth gravity model suitable for the GRM are developed, both based on the use of numerically integrated lumped coefficients rather than harmonic coefficients. The importance of higher-order resonances in the low-altitude GRM orbit is stressed.
