Models for the narrow emission line region (NLR) of active galactic nuclei have been calculated assuming that the NLR is composed of clouds of different densities reached by ionizing radiation from the central source and by relativistic electrons responsible for the compact radio emission observed from these objects. The integrated models have been obtained from models for a single emitting cloud, assuming for the clouds a distribution of densities in the range 10 to the 2nd - 10 to the 6th/cu cm. When compared to observations, the results including the effect of the relativistic electrons on the photoionized gas give a better fit. In addition, the coupled effect of the relativistic electrons and matter-bounded clouds can reproduce the observed low excitation line ratios without invoking underabundances.
