The interpretation of broad-band optical and infrared colors of symbiotic stars is discussed. A comparison of the near-infrared and IRAS characteristics of S-type symbiotics and nonsymbiotic M-giants suggests that, although different from bright local M-giants, the symbiotic stars are very similar to the M-giants found in the Bulge and elsewhere. Possible interpretations of this similarity are considered.
