We present CO (1-0) and (2-1) observations towards the central region of 18 active galaxies taken from the Markarian catalog. By comparing the two lines obtained at the Swedish-ESO telescope and the IRAM Telescope we find: (1) the molecular gas is strongly concentrated towards the center of these galaxies, (2) the (1-0)/(2-1) line ratio for the same area on the galaxy is typically 2 with the notable exception of Mkn617 where the (2-1) line is much stronger than the (1-0) line, (3) the 1.3-mm dust emission and the CO (2-1) luminosity L(CO) give compatible values for the gas mass, M(gas), if one uses for the conversion M(gas)/solar mass equal to about 4 L(CO). A proportionality factor of about 3 is suggested by calculations of radiative transfer for model clouds that could be expected in an active nucleus.
