It is shown that a simple star formation history of a single-burst single-metallicity intermediate-age stellar population can be determined from its stellar luminosity function with an age resolution of 20 percent, if the observed stellar luminosity function has 2000-4000 stars in the absolute magnitude range between 1.2 and 4.8 mag and bin widths of 0.2 mag. More complicated star formation histories or histories with mostly very early star formation will require more stars. A star formation history for the Carina dwarf speroidal galaxy is derived from the analysis of its stellar luminosity function, which agrees well with the star formation histories of this galaxy determined by analyzing color magnitude diagrams.
