Interstellar Medium: Dust. Infrared Radiation

Scientific paper

Possible carriers of the 21-μm feature are discussed. After considering organic coals and ferrocenes, we present the case for the N-C-N and O-C-N deformation vibrations of simple amides. It is shown that carbamide, CO (NH2)2, mixed with organic coal (to provide the continuum) and SiC (to provide the 1l.3-μm band), in a cool extended, circumstellar envelope, can reasonably reproduce the mid- and far-ir spectra of the two best documented pre-planetary nebulae which emit the 21-μm feature. We also hint at the relation to the LRS spectra of many stars which exhibit broad 11.5- and 20-μm features.
