The coincidence of all relevant time scales in young supernova remnants, from the macroscopic life time of the SNR to the microscopic ionization- and energy transfer time scales can cause non-LTE configurations of the local electron distribution function. For a pure iron plasma with electron temperatures in the range Te = l07 - l08 K we determine the shape of the equilibrium electron distribution function including ionization- and recombination effects and discuss its influence on the energy transfer rate and ionization structure of the gas.
