We have observed the interstellar CH+ line at 3957 Å toward ζ Oph, with a high S/N-ratio and high dispersion, to determine the 12C/13C ratio. We obtain a 12CH+/13CH+ ratio of 68 ± 7 (standard error of mean for 16 independent samples). We re-analyse our previous CH+ result from the CH+ λ4232 line taking the broad component detected by Crane et al. (1991) into account. From this line we now find an isotope ratio of 71 ± 3. There is reasonable agreement with our previous isotope ratio from CH+ and with that of Crane et al. (1991), Snell et al. (1977) and with Vanden Bout & Snell (1980) but disagreement with the determination of Hawkins et al. (1985). The most likely carbon isotope ratio from CH+ towards ζ Oph is 70. If the 12CH+/13CH+ ratio is identical to the 12C/13C ratio, this indicates only a small decrease in this ratio in the local interstellar medium in the past 4.6 Gγr.
