We have conducted a series of sensitivity studies using the 1D Mars model of the University of Helsinki. The Monin-Obukhov parameterization of the surface layer was tested with different forms for the stability functions, and compared with Mars Pathfinder wind observations. The Dyer- Businger forms were found to give the best fit. Iteration of the M-O equations was not necessary. The Obukhov length was about -30 during daytime and +5 during nighttime. The importance of including water vapour in the radiative transfer was separately tested in the Pathfinder simulations. It seems to have a significant effect on the nighttime surface temperatures by increasing the downwelling radiation. We also tested the dependence of the diurnal surface temperature variation on soil thermal inertia, surface albedo, surface pressure and dust opacity. Results quite similar to Mellon at al. (JGR 2000) were obtained.
