Evidence supporting the various mechanisms proposed for the maintenance of spiral arms in spiral galaxies is considered. Of these mechanisms, three are shown to be supported by observations, statistics, or threories (the bar/oval, the companion, and the extended solid-body rotation curve). It is shown that, in the presence of a central bar or an oval distortion, a spiral shape is observed for most of the magnetic field lines. Excluding galaxies with a bar/oval, spiral galaxies with a companion that produces large tides are observed to have a spiral shape for most of the magnetic field lines (in the above two cases the spiral arms may be of material rather than density-wave nature). Spiral galaxies with a companion that produces small tides have global ring-shaped magnetid field lines. In the presence of an extended solid-body rotation curve, the global magnetic field lines also follow the spiral shape of the arms. The results predict a leakage of galactic magnetic fields into intergalactic/cosmological space.
