Star counts in the old open cluster NGC 2420 are presented. They are based on extensive plate photometry of 9420 stars in a 1.4°×1.4° region of sky centered on the cluster. The latter corresponds to 50×50 pc at an assumed cluster distance of 2.05 kpc. The maximum distance from the cluster center at which cluster members have been detected is 20arcmin (12 pc), and the number of cluster members detected inside this radius is 685±27. The cluster's luminosity function flattens out towards faint magnitudes. The cluster's mass function is consistent with the mass function of Salpeter (1955). The mass of detected cluster members is 668 M_sun;. It is conceivable that the total cluster mass could be much larger, if dark stellar remnants exist in the cluster, low-mass stars are present, and the cluster has the normal frequency of binaries. Chi-square fits indicate that the cluster's projected density distribution is consistent with the empirical model of King (1962). The observed core radius is 1.32arcmin (0.79 pc). The observed tidal radius is larger than 30arcmin (18 pc). This, together with theoretical considerations suggests that much of the cluster mass remains undetected.
