The discovery of a new Herbig-Haro object 2 arcmin northeast of Cep A is reported. High proper motions for this object and of various H-alpha knots west of Cep A (in GGD 37), are deduced by comparing new H-alpha images with the Palomar sky survey. For a distance of 725 pc, tangential velocities of 110 to 250 km/s are derived which have their common origin near the compact H II regions 2 and 3 (Hughes, 1985). The resulting kinematic age is 1800 + or - 400 yr. A weak pointlike source (I = 20.6 mag) is detected at the position of the compact H II region 3a. No further source (I less than or equal to 23 mag) could be found in the region of radio continuum emission. However, an elongated feature of diffuse 1-micron emission is observed in line with the northern chain of compact radio knots, which is directed from the central source to the new Herbig-Hero object. It is concluded that a center of activity near the H2O maser positions is responsible for Cep A, drives the molecular outflow, and also excites the compact radio continuum knots and surrounding HH objects. The observed total luminosity and the 21-cm radio continuum data are consistent with a B0.5V star or three B1 V ZAMS stars.
