A simple parameterization of spectral line profiles observed in right and left circularly polarized light is introduced and is interpreted in terms of averages over the visible stellar disk of various functions of the magnetic field. The anomalous Zeeman effect and the Doppler broadening due to stellar rotation are taken into account. The influence of the local Doppler broadening and of the instrumental broadening is also discussed. The approximations that are made are essentially the same that have been used in most previous determinations of magnetic fields of CP stars. Possible ways of testing these approximations are presented, and departures from their validity are shown to yield information about the correlations between the magnetic field and other properties of the stellar atmosphere.
