A new method for measuring the high energy deuteron abundances in cosmic rays is suggested and the existing information on their fluxes is reviewed. The method consists in measuring the integral fluxes of single charged particles by various detectors, namely nuclear emulsions and Cerenkov-scintillator counter telescopes (C-Sc). In nuclear emulsions, by virtue of their very method of detection, twice the flux of deuterons are detected as compared to that measured by C-Sc telescopes. A summary of the fluxes of various contaminating particles is given, a knowledge of which has come about only recently for Hyderabad location (especially the return albedo). The d/alpha and d/p ratio estimated in this work are 1 + or - 0.6 and 0.22 + or - 0.13. They however, have large errors. The importance of making such a determination on the propagation of alpha-particles in the Galaxy is pointed out. If a charge dependence of the escape pathlengths of high energy cosmic rays exists, then it cannot be understood from the model describing the Galaxy as a simple leaky box.
