The velocity noise generated by the piezoelastic modulator used in the resonant scattering spectrometers of the International Research on the Interior of the Sun (IRIS) program is analyzed. Calculations are presented for finding the accuracy by which the amplitude of oscillation and the gate timing must be controlled in order to obtain optimal performance of the IRIS spectrometers.
