The oscillator strengths of the Phillips bands determined in the laboratory by Erman et al. (1982) are compared with those calculated from solar observations. The photospheric models of Holweger and Mueller (1974) and Vernazza et al. (1977) are employed, assuming carbon abundance 8.67, dissociation energy 6.11 eV, microturbulence velocity 850 m/s, and Swan-band oscillator strength f(0-0) = 0.0239. The results are presented in graphs, and good agreement is found between the solar and laboratory values, confirming the assumption that the electronic transition moment depends on the internuclear distance.
