The validity of a two-temperature approximation is discussed in a general formulation of relaxation to thermodynamic equilibrium. It is shown that the energy exchange rates calculated by Imshennik and Molodtsov (1990) have a clear quantitative physical meaning for arbitrary parameters of nonequilibrium radiation. It is argued that the two-temperature approximation for the arbitrary finite difference of the radiation temperature and the matter temperature is an efficient and simple means for studying stellar radiation gas dynamics.
