It is pointed out that the present controversy over the nature of R136a,
concerning whether it is a single supermassive object or a cluster of
stars, is largely answered by the observations of Innes (1927) and the
comment of van den Bos (1928). It is a nebulous double star with a
position angle of about 220 deg and a separation of 0.5 arcsec.
