A criterion is described for estimating departures from thermal equilibrium in stars undergoing mass loss: the ratio of mass loss time to Kelvin time. Two flow patterns are examined by perturbation analysis, and the departures from thermal equilibrium are evaluated for several models. The nature of the implied perturbation is shown to vary from star to star and from point to point within a given star.
