The reflection effect and its turn-off (i.e., the OFF state) in the HZ Her/Her X-1 system is discussed along with the question of whether a nonaccreting disk still persists when the reflection effect is turned off. Observational manifestations of a nonaccreting disk are examined for the cases of a turbulent disk reservoir and a laminar disk that emits practically no energy. The possibility is considered of using the turn-off of the reflection effect as a criterion for choosing between the two disk models on the basis of photoelectric observations of the system. It is concluded that: (1) photometric effects of either type of disk should not exceed about 0.1 magnitude in the OFF state; (2) effects due to the ellipsoidal shape of HZ Her make the main contribution to the system's regular optical variability in the OFF state; and (3) analysis of photoelectric data should make it possible to estimate the contribution of the disk to the system's optical variability and perhaps to ascertain the nature of the disk.
