On the basis of hydrodynamic considerations, the influence of a spherical corona on the stability of rotationally symmetric oscillations of an inner ellipsoidal subsystem is analyzed by a linear theory. A relation is derived that expresses the critical eccentricity value at which the ellipsoid becomes unstable for a given corona density. As the ambient density increases, so does the critical eccentricity. Hence the corona has a stabilizing effect on the inner body.
