Classical and variable novae can be differentiated on the basis of the amplitude and frequency of their eruptions. Attention is given in this study to binary stars, especially to late-type stars. Binary system dynamics are evaluated, including: orbit, stellar spectra, gravitational field, and stellar masses. Also discussed are characteristics of the gas envelope: its mass and expansion parameters, variations in brightness, and emission of frequencies of short-period oscillation. It is pointed out, however, that observations of the gas envelope are to a large extent still inconclusive.
