L1498, in the Taurus molecular cloud, is a dynamically young but chemically evolved pre-protostellar core and a good laboratory for studying the early phase of low-mass star formation. As a result, we attempt to constrain the local conditions (ISRF, etc.) and density structure using a 3-D Monte Carlo dust radiative transfer model. Using a search of over 1000 models to existing flux and surface brightness data, we find that spherical models are not sufficient for understanding the source. Among our results, we find that it appears that an asymmetric external radiation field is necessary to understand the observations. This and other results are insensitive to beam chopping in the existing SCUBA observations.
