I explore the feasibility of detecting varying or transient astrophysical sources by comparing optical images against a model representation of the fiducial sky. For this test I use the shapelet models of Massey and Refregier, which are constructed from a complete orthonormal basis set and can often represent even complex objects with a limited number of terms. The shapelet model convolved by the (empirically determined) local PSF is fit to the reference data, resulting in a sharper model without need for deconvolution. These models can then be convolved with the PSF of subsequent observations and subtracted from the data to reveal any change from the reference. I compare the quality and speed of this procedure against existing image subtraction techniques.
