The measured cosmic ray- and electron-induced background detected by a proportional counter in earth orbit is presented. The data were obtained by the Hard X-ray Experiment on board the Astronomical Netherlands Satellite. The data are presented as a function of satellite position above the earth, i.e. geographical longitude and latitude, with the altitude varying between 200 and 1100 km.
