Carbon-rich veins from all seven ureilites and bulk samples from three ureilites (Goalpara, Havero, Novo Urei) were analyzed for He, Ne, Ar, Kr, and Xe by mass spectrometry with use of the stepwise heating technique. It was found that, in all cases, trapped rare gases of the fractionated 'planetary' type are strongly enriched in the vein material, up to at least 600-fold over the silicates. While gas contents, and consequently elemental abundance ratios, of the seven ureilites differ, the isotopic compositions are indistinguishable from one another for all cases except for Ar-40/Ar-36. Graphite, one of the main constituents of carbon-rich veins, is void of trapped gases, but diamonds, another major constituent, have very high gas contents. The presence of unidentified carrier(s) with a nuclide abundance pattern different from that of diamonds is indicated. Physical adsorption and ambipolar diffusion are discussed as potential mechanisms responsible for the observed fractionation pattern.
