A search has been made for the Zeeman effect in four H I high velocity clouds and in the 8200 km/s H I absorption feature of NGC 1275 (Perseus A). In HVC 132 + 23 - 212 a magnetic field of -11.4 + or - 2.4 micro-G was measured; toward NGC 1275 it was -9.3 + or - 2.7 micro-G. These results provide the first direct determinations of magnetic field strengths in Galactic high velocity clouds and in an external galaxy. The magnetic field strengths and limits are similar to values for normal Galactic H I clouds; there is no evidence for field compression and enhancement.
