The electronic spectrum of C60 is calculated using quantum mechanical methods. For comparison similar calculations are performed for a finite sheet of graphite containing up to 54 carbon atoms, the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons C24H12, C48H20, and C54H18, and linear acetylenic molecules, polyynes and cyanopolyynes. For C60, several transitions are found at high energies, some of them with very large oscillator strengths. A comparison is made between the calculated spectrum and recent experimental measurements. The possible relation between absorptions in neutral C60, its ions, and the strong interstellar feature at 217 nm as well as some of the diffuse interstellar bands is discussed. Other possible candidates for the interstellar UV absorption, such as linear acetylenic molecules and polyaromatic hydrocarbons, are also considered.
