The connection between the line spectra of type II supernovae in a relatively early hot phase and the parameters characterizing the atmospheric structures is investigated. Non-LTE spherically expanding model atmospheres in a radiative equilibrium composed of hydrogen and helium are utilized in the study. The characteristic effects of model parameters on the profiles of H-alpha, H-beta, He I 5876 A, and He I 10830 A are examined. The early H and He spectra of SN 1987A are analyzed in order to diagnose the atmospheric structure as well as to determine the He abundance. It is concluded that theoretical line-strengths tend to be weaker than observed ones; model improvements are suggested, especially in the area of density distribution. From the comparison of the He 5876/H-alpha strength-ratio, an overabundance of He by a factor of about 3 to 4 is indicated; this supports the hypothesis of He-rich origin for the blue-red-blue evolution of the progenitor.
